Back to School Morning Routine Ideas: Summer Play That Makes September Easier

Playful summer activities to help toddlers practise dressing, breakfast and morning routines before school starts — plus a free Morning Routine Games Starter Kit.

The summer holidays have a funny way of changing our routines. Bedtimes get a little later, breakfast happens whenever everyone’s hungry, pyjamas somehow stay on until lunchtime.

But I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing!

There are fewer clocks to watch and more time to simply enjoy being together.

But if your little one is starting preschool or school soon, it’s also a lovely opportunity to gently practise some of the routines they’ll soon be doing every day. I recently had a welcome meeting for my son’s new nursery, due to start in September, and more than focussing on how high they can count to, the focus was very much on home routines — getting dressed independently, eating breakfast before school, arriving on time etc. These are exactly the things I created Toddler Tasks for (you’ll find a free starter kit further down if you’d like to give it a try).

Not by introducing strict schedules, and definitely not by drilling them — by playing.

Summer Is the Perfect Time to Practise Your Toddler’s Morning Routine

One thing I’ve realised is that little ones learn best when there’s no pressure. If we’re rushing to leave the house, everything suddenly feels much more important, but during the holidays there’s space to slow down. That makes it the perfect time to practise little skills they’ll soon need.

Putting on their own T-shirt. Walking to the front door when it’s time to go out. Sitting at the table for breakfast. Climbing into the car happily. Not because they have to. Because it’s become part of a game.

Play Builds Confidence Before Preschool Mornings

We often think of routines as something children simply have to get used to. But confidence grows through repetition. When toddlers get to practise dressing, breakfast and leaving the house through play, they’re learning those routines without even realising it. They’re building independence in a way that feels fun rather than pressured.

Don’t Worry About Perfect Routines

I’m definitely not suggesting recreating a school morning throughout the holidays. Summer should still feel like summer. But weaving little playful routines into everyday moments means the transition back to preschool or school feels much gentler when September arrives — and with the new term just weeks away, now’s the easiest time to start.
